Making Tax Digital, made simple
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme to move the UK tax system fully online. It means keeping digital records and reporting to HMRC using compatible software, rather than filing a single return once a year. We take the worry out of it — getting you set up, keeping you compliant and training you to stay in control.
What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's plan to bring the tax system online. Instead of pulling everything together for a single return once a year, you keep your records digitally and report to HMRC through compatible software during the year.
It's being introduced in stages. MTD for VAT is already here. MTD for Income Tax is now being phased in for sole traders and landlords. Whatever applies to you, we'll explain it clearly and make sure you're ready well ahead of time.
Already in force for VAT-registered businesses.

MTD for VAT applies to all VAT-registered businesses. You must keep digital VAT records and file your returns using MTD-compatible software.

The timeline for sole traders & landlords.
HMRC is rolling out MTD for Income Tax in stages, based on your qualifying income. Here's when each group is brought in.
-
From April 2026
Qualifying income over £50,000
Sole traders and landlords whose combined self-employment and property income is above £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates, plus a final declaration.
-
From April 2027
Qualifying income over £30,000
The threshold lowers to £30,000, bringing many more sole traders and landlords into Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
-
From April 2028
Qualifying income over £20,000
The threshold lowers again to £20,000, expanding the scheme to most self-employed people and landlords.
Under MTD for Income Tax, four quarterly updates and a year-end final declaration replace the traditional annual Self Assessment return. Qualifying income is your gross self-employment and property income before expenses, and HMRC uses your most recent tax return to decide when you must join. The dates above reflect the current Government timetable.
